I have been to Bicol twice but I did not get to taste their sili (chili) ice cream. That is why when 1st Colonial Grill, Home of the Original Sili Ice Cream, opened a branch in Tagaytay City, I decided to give it a try.

A friend suggested their tinapa (smoked fish) fried rice so we gave it a try. It turned out to be a meal on its own and we liked it a lot.

We also ordered their stuffed squid, laing (dried taro leaves cooked in coconut milk), and sizzling pork sisig. They all tasted good. Our only complaint was that their pork sisig was not "sizzling" when they served it to us because the hot plate was not hot. Nonetheless, they were quick to remedy the problem when we called the attention of the waiter.

And of course, I did not forget to try their sili ice cream. For those like me, who are not sure if they can handle the heat, they were willing to give us a free taste. It came in different levels of "hotness" and we tried Level 1. Realizing that even the lowest level was too hot for us, we decided to order their pili ice cream instead and it didn't disappoint.

Eating in 1st Colonial Grill was a nice experience and it was great to be able to taste Bicolano cuisine without having to travel too far. I am sure that this would not be our last visit because I still have to try their tinutungang manok (chicken cooked in coconut milk with vegetables), a classic Bicol favorite.
